The National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi, Makueni governor Kivutha Kibwana, NARC-Kenya party leader Martha Karua, and Mukhisa Kituyi, former secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) today held a consultative meeting at Wote, Makueni County with the quartet confirming a solid unity ahead of the next year’s general elections. Among the four, three which includes: Muturi, Kituyi and governor Kibwana are eyeing the country’s top seat with Karua having an ambition of clinching the Kirinyang’a gubernatorial seat in 2022.
The leader held closed door meeting before touring several county projects that they commissioned. These includes; Makueni vocational training center for people living with disability, Makueni county referral hospital oxygen plant, mother and child hospital before converging at Wote Green park that was officially opened to public by the National Assembly speaker. It was at the park’s amphitheater where they made a declaration that they will seek votes from Kenyans and that they will not wait for an endorsement from anybody. Speaker Muturi slammed some alliances which he said to have been meeting in various hotels waiting to be validated into presidency.
“Let all aspirants seek for votes so that Kenyans weigh them. This issue of certain leaders being taken into hotels will not help them because they have been in these positions for many years and they have not done anything,” said Muturi. The speaker on the other hand criticized Independent, Electoral and Boundaries Commission for what he termed as lack of transparency in their preparations for next year’s elections. “IEBC must assure Kenyans through public participation of credible elections. We have created sufficient room through the constitution, political parties act, and parties must know what the commission is doing,” he said.
He said that the many political parties in Kenya are not aware of what the elections body is doing to repair the mess that has been identified in the past as weaknesses in their processes. “Can IEBC seek ideas from others so that they create trust with this system,” Muturi posed. He added they were ready to give the commission enough budget to run the elections. At the same time, he warned government officials from being used to drum for support for certain candidates.
“The moment we use civil servants to do politics then we lose the most funds because they can’t be questioned when they start diverting resources for personal benefits,” he warned. The host, Makueni governor said journey of transformative leadership for the country had begun which only lies on their hands.
“We will sit down with those transformative leaders and we will make a decision as one because we are not selfish for Kenya. These are people who can bring about with the people of Kenya the change you can trust,” said Kibwana.
Kibwana on Monday was made a Muungano party presidential flag bearer after ditching Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper party causing more rift in the region. The NARC Kenya party leader revisited what she termed as “stolen” victory from her in 2017 when she vied for Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat saying it was high time for IEBC to have reforms to avoid a repeat.
“We must protect our votes because we don’t want to be brought again leaders who are “Vifaranga vya kompyuta”. Electoral Commission is planning for next year elections without consultations and my worry is if we will have free and fair elections. I want to ask why the courts rejected the 2017 presidential elections which means there were problems,” she said. She said they will remain united to ensure they bring the best president next year. The former UNCTAD secretary General said he has a responsibility of ensuring unity of all like-minded leaders.
“We will continue hunting for votes from the people but at one time we will sit down amongst ourselves and know the first among equals,” Kituyi said. On 18th August 2021, through National Alliance for Change, Muturi, Kibwana and Kituyi held a meeting in a Nairobi hotel, a meeting that was seen to be a drawing board for 2022 presidential formula.
