A Kilifi-based pastor has been arraigned before the court in a miscellaneous application for the offence of radicalization, contrary to Section 12(d) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012.
His arrest followed an operation by a Multi-Agency Team targeting activities linked to the New Foundation Church located in Chakama Location, Kilifi County.
According to preliminary reports, the pastor is alleged to have been indoctrinating his followers with extreme religious teachings that discouraged conventional medical treatment.
Congregants were reportedly instructed to climb a tree within the church compound regarded as sacred to receive divine healing instead of seeking hospital care.
“Among other teachings his followers were taught not to attend any hospital when sick but to climb a tree believed to be sacred and located within the church compound for them to receive their healing,” noted the detectives.
Investigations further revealed that the pastor sold what he termed “maji ya uzima” (water of life) from a private well within the church compound, claiming it had healing properties.
A litre of the water reportedly retailed for KES 200.
Authorities suspect that at least two congregants may have died as a result of the church’s practices, with an estimated two hundred others believed to be at risk should the controversial religious activities remain unchecked.
While law enforcement agencies reaffirm their commitment to upholding the constitutional right to freedom of worship, they have urged the public to exercise caution when joining religious groups, particularly those that propagate teachings that may endanger lives.
The investigation team has been granted ten days to conclude their inquiry.
The case is scheduled for mention on 5th May 2025.
