KISII COUNCIL CONDEMNS BREACH OF PEACE

Kisii council of elders has stated   the region will continue to be a haven of peace despite a recent disruption of a political rally at Gusii stadium.

Abagusii culture and development council, condemned the incident in which a tear gas canister exploded at the podium when Azimio La Umoja,One Kenya coalition presidential running-mate Martha Karua rose to speak.

Addressing the media in Kisii, the council chairman Matundura Araka termed the disruption ,a futile  attempt to portray the local community as hostile to visitors.

He, however, commended Karua for her revisit the following day, remarking it is an abomination to hurt  guest especially  a woman  among the Abagusii community.

Matundura alluded to post independence period when the community harbored  Mzee Jomo Kenyatta at the height  of freedom fighters’ clampdown by the colonial government.

Victims of the 2007/2008 post election violence also found protection in the community, he added.

The community was urged to guard against those bent on damaging its long built respect and assured the members of the council’s support.

Bosire Angwenyi, the secretary general  appealed to the elders not to  abandon political activities but instead participate and guide the youth aspiring to be future leaders.

According to area police, an administration action has since been taken against a plain clothes police officer, whose tear gas canister had detonated.
