The commission urged women seeking to work abroad to do due diligence and make the necessary inquiries as many girls have suffered abroad in their bid to seek livelihoods.
Esther Kanga, the pioneer of the Kirira rescue center for young girls fleeing from FGM and early marriages in Tharaka said that female rights ought to be protected and her rescue centre has been of help in helping young girls access education and empower them to achieve their life long dreams.
Kanga’s remarks were echoed by Ann Marie Okutoyi who works with the KNCHR who said that the commission was keen on ensuring women’s rights are protected.
Okutoyi urged women seeking employment from abroad to seek council from the relevant authorities before moving to those other countries in order to ascertain their safety.
She said that many Kenyan girls had been forced into sex slavery while working abroad, instead of the lucrative jobs they had been promised.
Kitui CECM for Sports, Culture, and Tourism, a re-known musician Helena Ken urged women not to shy away from reporting any form of abuse in their homes and to let the authorities know whenever their rights are breached.
Helena said that just like men, women deserved a good a just life, devoid of mistreatment of any kind.
