Kenya National Union of Teachers [KNUT] Secretary General Collins Oyuu has called upon the government to open discussions on teachers’ remuneration package immediately.
He insisted time has come for the government to open the discussion with the teachers.
“The national assembly has withdrawn the clause suspending any discussions on salary increment for two years now,” he pointed out.
Oyuu applauded the legislators for moving very fast to act in support of the union lobby to accept to withdraw the clause.
He spoke on the third day of the annual Kenya Primary Schools Head Teachers Association (KEPSHA) delegates’ conference held in Nyali constituency.
The KNUT Secretary General said they demand for the opening of the discussion of teachers’ salary hike before next year’s polls.
Oyuu cautioned the government they are not to going to go for any carrot dangled before them ahead of the polls.
He added it’s the right of the union to negotiate and to take such a bold step.
“We call upon the government through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to sit and go back to the drawing board and start fresh negations,” he said.
Speaking at same forum Kenya National Examinations Council [KNEC] Chief Executive Officer [CEO] Dr David Njengere faulted the current education system of releasing 405,000 pupils who sit for their national examinations without any plan.
He said it will be wrong to sit back and say all is well while every year the government releases the pupils without any plan.
“The only best thing is that there is a certificate for taking part in the national examinations and that is why there is urgent need to change the system,” he pointed out.
The 17th annual Primary head teachers’ delegates’ conference which was presided over by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha on Tuesday is ending today at Sheikh Zayed centre in Mombasa county.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha presided over the official opening on the second day of the four day event at the coastal city.
