The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has intensified its # OperationOndoaFisi campaign by deploying a specialized ranger unit to tackle the ongoing human-hyena conflict in key areas, throughout Kiambu county and a section of Machakos county including Juja Farm, Thika West, Ruiru, and Athi River.

This operation aims to provide a swift and effective response to this escalating issue between humans and wildlife more specifically the carnivorous hyenas.

“We will ensure the success of the operation in the shortest time possible,” said Mr. Joseph Dadacha, the senior assistant director for the southern conservation area,

He spoke during a briefing at the Tropical Farm command base pledging full support of the operation whilst reassured the team for the operation’s success.

Local leaders have showcased their support for the campaign.

Hon. Moses Kuria, Senior Advisor to the Council of Economic Affairs at State House, praised KWS for its dedication.

“I commend KWS for its commitment to resolving this issue while highlighting the need for a collaborative approach to solving the matter,” expressed Moses Kuria.

“A multi-agency effort is crucial to ensuring the operation’s success.” he added.

The Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) also present at the briefing at the Tropical Farm command base further reiterated the importance of a coordinated effort in addressing the human-hyena conflict in Juja and its surrounding areas.

With concerted efforts from KWS and local authorities, the operation # OperationOndoaFisi is set to restore the balance, safety and harmony between humans and wildlife in the region.

After the initial phase of the operation, KWS will most likely conduct frequent monitoring of the affected areas to assess the impact of the operation, track the movement of hyenas, and ensure that the conflict is effectively reduced.

KWS may even end up implementing long-term strategies such as habitat management, relocation of aggressive animals, and development of fencing or other barriers to prevent future conflicts.
