Leaders from Nyatieko ward Kitutu chache South sub county have rejected location of a dumpsite dubbed garbage management project by Kisii county government.
Speaking at a meeting where county government officers and area elected leaders were conspicuously absent, opinion leaders from the community condemned the project for lack of non-consultation.
They claimed the residents’ views on the project were never sought through public participation and that the county government was forcing it on them.
Eng. Justus Mochoge complained that the residents were witnessing a perimeter wall being erected by a contractor in total violation of construction rules and regulations.
According to him the residents will cite the project owners for contempt of court.
Samuel Omwando said the dumpsite should be opposed for being dangerous to the residents, public institutions and water resource.
He suggested that the county government establish garbage management centres at every sub county instead of singling out Kitutu Chache.
Euneah Nyanduko claimed the residents still wanted their approval to be sought by the county government on the dumpsite without which it stood rejected.
A first attempt to implement the project was met with resistance where some residents were arrested and others assaulted by the county enforcement officers and riot police.
Calm was restored after the leaders agreed to convene a public participation meeting to iron out the misunderstandings which aborted.
