Leicester City defender announces shock retirement

Leicester City defender, Christian Fuchs,  has tweeted his appreciation of his time as Austria captain, having retired from international duty earlier on Wednesday.

The former Schalke defender would have been delighted to have won what would seem like an impossible Premier League trophy in his first season in England.

“It was an honour to play for & lead my country. Thanks to the staff, my teammates & the fans for their support”

Leicester City defender Fuchs, 30, was unable to help Austria reach the knockout stages of Euro 2016, failing to secure a first European Championships win yet they were fancied to contest top spot in.

Austria suffered a disappointing exit, failing to reproduce their impressive qualifying form as they finished bottom of Group F, behind Austria, Iceland and Portugal.

It led the defender to call it a day in international football, having made 78 appearances for his country and scoring one goal. For much of the last few years, Fuchs has been captaining Austria for what was one of the most encouraging periods in recent history.

He had earlier announced his decision on his Facebook page, in a video where he said the “match against Iceland was my last one in red-white-red, I’m very proud of the 10 years I spent with the national team, I did everything with passion.”
