How long should you brush your teeth?

Over 70 per cent of people do not brush their teeth with keen as per the guidelines of the professional medical officer, and mostly the dentist.

Normally, people spend an average of 30 seconds to brush their teeth, which is around 25 per cent of the time that one should spend at the washroom cleaning their mouth.

Dentist advice that, in order to keep your teeth glistening clean and free from sugar and infection, you should spent 3o seconds in each quarter of your mouth, which amounts to two minutes for the whole p

Dr. Anna Guarna, a dentist for over twenty years in Connecticut, goes one step further and typically has her patients brush for three minutes — one and a half minutes on both the upper teeth and the bottom teeth.

Though it is important to pay attention to how long you’re brushing, it’s even more important to make sure all surfaces are clean. According to Guarna, “Proper brushing technique is probably more important than timing.”

Proper brushing should be using short strokes, moving back and forth against the teeth and gums, around the surface of every tooth. Use the tip of the brush to reach behind each front tooth on the top and bottom.

Too much brushing it’s not an issue of brushing for too long. However, it’s an issue of applying too much pressure when brushing. Using too much pressure can cause abrasion of the enamel and of the gum tissue, which can lead to tooth sensitivity.

The dentist also go ahead to advice on frequency of brushing with brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for about two minutes to help keep your teeth and mouth healthy highly recommended.

Remember to brush the inside surfaces, outside surfaces and the chewing surfaces of your teeth. Also, the dentist advices you replace your toothbrush after every three months.

However there has been a debate on whether to or to not rinse your mouth after brushing your teeth. Several post-brush studies conducted advice not to rinse the mouth immediately.

The study suggest that, retaining fluoride in your mouth allows the ingredients to work effectively on the teeth for healthier teeth. However, medics dentist also say that if you effectively brush your teeth the there is no reason as to why you should not rinse your mouth.

Brushing technique.

The right way to brush your teeth according to DR. says Dr Ogo Eze, is known as the modified Bass technique.

“The idea is that it’s OK to brush in circles and up and down, but when it comes to the gum line, you should tip the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, and apply gentle pressure so it blanches just under the gums, then vibrate there and flick away,” says Eze.

“Your brush shouldn’t travel across the gums. It’s important to get just underneath the gum because a lot of food and bacteria get trapped there,” he adds.

You should always brush your tongue, or buy a tongue scraper. “Bacteria and plaque stick to the tongue, so do it whenever you brush.” It should take two to three minutes to do a thorough job.

To allow saliva do its job effectively, you are not supposed to brush for half an hour after eating. Before this, your teeth are at their weakest and brushing can damage the enamel.
