LSK Advocates for Release of Protestors in Nairobi

Members of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) organization in Nairobi have successfully secured the release of protestors from various police stations across the city.

The protestors were arrested on Tuesday during the Finance Bill 2024 demonstration dubbed ‘Occupy Parliament’.

According to the LSK President Faith Odhiambo, protestors held at Kilimani police station have been released and the National Council is holding a vigil at Central Police Station to ensure the release of those being detained there.

“The national council is holding vigil at Central Police Station to ensure all those being held at the station are released. Some of our members were at Kilimani Police Station earlier where they have secured the release of the protestors that had been held there,” stated LSK President Faith Odhiambo.

The LSK president has also urged its members within the vicinity of Kamukunji Police Station to go and support the team there to ensure the release of protestors being detained there.

She further asserted that the council remains committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the fundamental rights of Kenyan citizens.

She commended the advocates for fearlessly stepping forward to stand for what is just and right.

“We remain steadfast to ensuring the rule of law is not circumvented and the rights of our people respected. We appreciate the support and encouragement from the public, and laud all the brave Advocates who came out today to stand for what is right,” the LSK boss noted.

LSK’s move comes hours after the law society had issued a statement condemning Nairobi Region Police Commander Mr. Adamson Bungei, for instructing officers to interfere with the peaceful protests organized by Kenyans outside parliament.

“We are particularly shocked that Mr. Adamson Bungei, on a frolic of his own, has elected to ignore notification of the protest from the organisers under the guise of lack of form. We wish to sound our unequivocal warning to Mr. Bungei and all officers acting under his command from taking any act of aggression against the protestors in the name of giving effect to this unlawful, unreasonable, and irrational directive,” said LSK President on her X page.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has threatened to take legal action against Nairobi Police boss Adamson Bungei and any law enforcement officer accountable for any violations of the protestors’ rights.

Human rights groups have also called for the release of protesters, observers, and journalists arrested during the ‘Occupy Parliament’ Protest.
