Maasai Mara University has received a new modern bus from Maasai Mara council and seven sewing machines from Bedi Investment which will be used to make sanitary towels for girls within the university and girls within Narok county as one way of giving back to the community.
Speaking after receiving this donation, Maasai Mara University Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Kitche Magak thanked the council for donating a 14.2million modern bus saying this bus will be used for academic purposes and thanked Bedi officials for donating sewing machines saying this machine will help a lot since the students will be trained on how to make this sanitary towels and also the university will allow girls from Narok to be trained within the university on this and this is one way of appreciating the community who allowed the university to be brought within the county. He added that Narok has been ranked for having many girls dropping out of school and some drop out due to lack of sanitary pads and this innovation will help a lot since university will be producing many pads to make sure those girls remain in schools.
Dr. Kennedy Ole Kerei, Council Chairman Maasai Mara University said the sewing machine will help since they have been urged by the government to look for partnership to finance their operation since the issue of Covid-19 has made it hard for the government to give all the resources into the university like before to make sure all operations of the university run smoothly. He added that the sewing machines donated to them which will be used to make sanitary towels and masks will help a lot in innovation and this will help since even the community surrounding the university will get help from university since Narok girls are suffering a lot and even some drop from the school since they are not able to get sanitary towels and that the project will help girls within the university and within Narok county to be getting the sanitary towels from the university as one way of giving back to the society.
While donating the sewing machines to the university, Bedi corporate manager Peris Mbuthia say they will still donate others soon and their aim is to make sure girls within the university and its environment are not dropping out of school since they lack the sanitary towels saying this towels when available will cost 1000-1500kshs and it will last for one and half year since it is reusable and called the university to train Maasai girls so that they can go back to their village and help other girls. She also called the university to train both girls and boys saying they have seen even boys doing well in the designing industry.
