Governor Alfred Mutua has today unveiled a statue of freedom fighter Muindi Mbingu in Machakos ahead of Thursday’s Mashujaa Day celebrations which President Uhuru Kenya, Deputy President William Ruto and other dignitaries are to attend on Thursday.
Two other statues, those of renown Ukambani politicians Paul Ngei and Mulu Mutisya all constructed by the County Government of Machakos as historical monuments of the heroes, will also be unveiled on Wednesday and Thursday.
Ngei’s statue has been erected at the Chumvi junction along the Machakos-Nairobi highway while Mutisya’s has been put up at the Mulu Mutisya gardens in Machakos Town.
Mutua who spoke in Machakos Town during the unveiling of Mbingu’s statue said the recognition of the heroes is not only a good thing but a sign of maturity and development.
Someone once said that we study history so that we can compare it with the present and make decisions of the future. This is very true and we are who we are today because of the actions and sacrifices of heroes such as Muindi Mbingu,” said Mutua.
“He was even jailed for seven years in Lamu, accused of perpetuating the Mau Mau struggle. He is a real Kenyan hero,” said Mutua.
“From today, our children and our children’s great grandchildren will henceforth visit this site and ensure the memory of this hero and others like him are not forgotten, for hundreds of years to come.”
“Using this as a stepping stone, we can achieve wealth and a good life for our people and rise to greatness higher than they would have envisioned.”
