A Kibera High court has sentenced a man to 30 years after being found guilty of killing his ex-wife.
“Amos Wanjala Mutelwa was handed the sentence after Prosecuting Counsel Peris Maina proved to the court beyond reasonable doubt that he murdered his 24-year-old ex-lover in 2018,” stated the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
The court’s decision followed testimonies from five witnesses, including an eyewitness, who recounted the circumstances surrounding the crime.
The eyewitness testified that upon discovering his ex-lover’s intention to marry her new boyfriend, the accused contacted her to demand the return of gifts he had given her. When she hesitated to comply, a confrontation ensued, during which he fatally stabbed her with a kitchen knife.
“When her ex-lover hesitated to heed to the request, a quarrel ensued leading to him stabbing her with a kitchen knife,” wrote the ODPP.
After the incident, he fled the scene but was apprehended by a crowd responding to her cries for help.
The prosecution successfully demonstrated that there were documented conflicts between the deceased and the accused that contributed to her death.
he family of the deceased expressed to the court the profound impact of her loss, describing her as a cherished member of their family, known for her charm, respectfulness, and promising future.
In her ruling, Judge Diana Mochache noted the accused’s lack of remorse and his persistent denial of the crime, instead claiming that the deceased had inflicted the injury upon herself.
“In her ruling, Judge Diana Mochache observed the accused was not remorseful, had constantly denied committing the act, instead alleging that the deceased stabbed herself,” added the ODPP.
