Man steals offering just few days after state pardon

Lucas Ngugi Njoroge, one of those released from jail on Friday after the president ordered the release of 7,000 jailed petty thieves is back in jail.

The 26-yeal-old was caught two days later stealing from the collection basket at a church in Laikipia West just four days after Mashujaa Day that took place on last Thursday.

Ngugi was serving time at the Nyahururu GK Prison until the time of his release.

According to witness, at the Ol Jabet African Independent Pentecostal Church, Njoroge moved towards the contribution bucket, pretending he was making some offering, during the offertory time,  but instead fetched Sh. 900.

Agnes Wambui, who rose some suspicion said the service was disrupted after some members saw the man stuffing the money into his pocket.

The man was rescued by assistant Chief Charles Ngunjiri, a member of the church, said he rescued the man from worshippers, who wanted to beat him up. “He confessed to stealing the money,” the chief said.

However, the suspect, Njoroge is said to have denied the charges, but later accepted and was later escorted to the Ol Jabet Police Post for interrogation.

“He later changed his story and said that he was in the process of putting the money back into the basket after realising that it was wrong to steal from the church,” Mr Ngunjiri said.

“It is just amazing that someone can go into a church and be that disrespectful in a place of worship. He will be arraigned in court once we are through with investigations,” Nyahururu police division commander (OCPD) Ezekiel Chepkwony said confirming that police officers were holding the man and will take him to court once investigations are complete.
