The Members of Parliament and their counter parts in Senate went ahead to reject the salaries increment of all senior public officers as proposed by the SRC.
Led by the Member of National Assembly for Lang’ata Constituency Hon. Felix Oduor popularly known as Jalang’o has said that he will not accept the extra 14,000 shillings added to him what he termed as a set-up of leaders against the public.
“There are things that almost look like a setup! We are in a crisis and SRC are proposing an increment of 14K ! Yaani mnataka tupigwe tukufe ndio mfurahi? Mimi sitaki!” Hon. Jalang’o wrote on X.
He was joined by other legislators who also rejected the salary increment terming it as insensitive at such a time when the country is in a crisis.
This happens after majority of the Members of Parliament were condemned by the public for voting YES in favour of the controversial Finance Bill 2024 that was totally rejected by Kenyans.
Some legislators were attacked by angry Kenyans even went to an extend of attacking their business and burning them down.
Aaron Cheruiyot, the Senate Majority Leader, has also declined the salary increase proposed by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), stating that the earnings of leaders should align with the current economic conditions.
Senator Cheruiyot went on record urging his fellow legislators to reject the salary increment pointing an accusing finger to SRC for keeping quiet during the anti-government protest and failed to propose solutions to the problems we are facing as a nation.
“SRC has been silent during these protests. They have to speak and tell us what is it that we do to reduce the wage bill from 46 per cent to mandatory 35 per cent. If it means taking a pay cut, we as members of parliament have been told that we will never do it. We don’t have an option, we must do it,” Hon. Cheruiyot said in the Senate proceedings.
