Met Department Warns On Heavy Rainfall

By Marline Atieno

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned citizens across the nation that heavy rains are forecasted to lash several parts of the country in the coming days.

The advisory comes amidst concerns over potential flooding, landslides, and other weather-related hazards.

According to meteorologists, the heavy rains are expected to be accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, posing significant risks to both urban and rural areas.

Regions particularly prone to flooding, such as low-lying areas and areas near rivers are urged to take extra precautions.

Regions expected to receive rainfall include Western Kenya, parts of Northwestern, Lake Victoria Basin, and Rift Valley regions.

The most recent statement from the Kenya Meteorological Department follows a day after the department disclosed that rainfall was anticipated to diminish in several regions of the country.

“Intermittent showers are expected over Western Kenya, sections of the Rift Valley, Central Kenya, and the coastal strip,” disclosed the Kenya Meteorological Department in its forecast for May 15.

In its weather forecast for Wednesday, May 15, the meteorological department highlighted that the highest intensity of rainfall occurred in April and no significant flooding was anticipated.

Kenyans were cautioned to prepare for elevated daytime temperatures reaching as high as 30 degrees Celsius, particularly in many areas of the Coast, North-eastern and North-western regions.

Citizens are urged to stay updated on weather forecasts and advisories issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department and to follow safety guidelines to minimize risks.

This includes avoiding crossing flooded areas, securing loose items that could be blown away by strong winds, and heeding evacuation orders issued by authorities if necessary.
