On May 28, 2024, the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court User’s Committee (CUC) convened at the Milimani Court Building for a crucial meeting.
Chaired by Chief Magistrate Hon. Thomas Nzyoki, the gathering brought together a diverse group of state and non-state actors, including representatives from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the Judiciary, National Police Service, Asset Recovery Agency (ARA), International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), and Transparency International.
The ODPP was represented by the Acting Deputy Director in Charge of the Department of Economic, International, and Emerging Crimes (EI & EC), Mr. Gitonga Riungu, OGW, accompanied by several prosecutors.
In his address, Mr. Riungu emphasized the severe threats posed by corruption and outlined the necessity of adhering to the 3Cs principle: collaboration, cooperation, and coordination. This principle, he asserted, is crucial in effectively combating corruption and related crimes.
Mr. Riungu also revealed that the ODPP would intensify its focus on handling offences such as money laundering as part of its strategy to combat corruption.
He committed to maintaining and enhancing close working relationships with other agencies to ensure a cohesive approach.
His speech underscored the importance of unified efforts in tackling the multifaceted challenges posed by corruption.
A significant point of discussion at the CUC meeting was the organization of joint training sessions for all members. These sessions are aimed at addressing new and emerging areas of concern, ensuring that all involved parties are well-equipped to handle the evolving nature of corruption-related offences.
Additionally, the committee members were briefed on the progress made in preparing for the upcoming Anti-Corruption Open Day, scheduled for June 7, 2024.
This event is anticipated to play a pivotal role in raising public awareness and fostering a collective stand against corruption.
The meeting highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration and proactive measures in the ongoing fight against corruption, setting the stage for more effective and coordinated efforts in the future.
