Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir has called on President William Ruto to honor his commitment by ensuring that all charges against anti-government protesters are dismissed.
Speaking during the issuance of grants to various fishing groups in Mombasa and its environs, Governor Nassir emphasized the need for justice for the protests victims.
Mombasa County boss urged President Ruto to compensate those who were injured or killed during the demonstrations.
“Victims of police brutality MUST be compensated and those few rogue police officers who break the law must be held to account for their actions. Kenya must be a country of the rule of law,” Governor Nassir noted.
Governor Nassir appealed to the President to follow through on his promise by dropping the charges against all individuals arrested during the protests.
“Be true to your word, and I know that you will do it, drop the cases against those who were arrested,” Nassir emphasized.
On Wednesday, President Ruto agreed to the Opposition’s demands to release all those detained during the recent protests.
He directed security agencies to comply with this order and instructed that all charges against these individuals be dismissed.
“I urge the Criminal Justice Agencies to take effective measures and ensure that people who may have been innocently caught in these situations are released and the charges against them are dropped,” President Ruto said.
The issuance of grants to various fishing groups in Mombasa and its environs is part of the government’s initiative to support local communities and enhance the fishing industry.
