The launch event, held in Mumias, Kakamega County, brought together key stakeholders, government officials, and jubilant farmers who have long awaited this moment of financial empowerment.
The issuance of bonuses marks a pivotal shift, reflecting the positive outcomes of comprehensive reforms aimed at revitalizing the sugar sector.
Speaking during the launch of the issuance of bonuses for sugarcane farmers, Mumias, Kakamega County, President William Ruto lauded the resilience and dedication of the farmers, emphasizing the crucial role they play in the national economy.
“This historic issuance of bonuses to our hardworking farmers is a testament to the success of our collective efforts to reform the sugar sector. It not only uplifts thousands of livelihoods but also sets the stage for Kenya to achieve surplus sugar production and commence regional exports by 2026,” President Ruto stated.
According to the head of state, in 2024, Kenya achieved a record production of 832,000 tonnes of sugar, a feat attributed to improved agricultural practices, enhanced support for farmers, and strategic investments in the industry.
The bonus issuance initiative aims to incentivize farmers, ensuring they reap the rewards of their labor while encouraging sustained investment in sugarcane cultivation.
This move is expected to enhance productivity, and position sugarcane farming as a viable and rewarding venture for thousands of Kenyan families.
As Kenya marches towards its goal of surplus production, the government remains committed to supporting the sector through continued reforms, infrastructure development, and market expansion initiatives.
This milestone not only highlights the success of recent sectorial changes but also showcases the vast potential of Kenya’s sugar industry in improving livelihoods and driving economic growth.
