The National Aids Control Council (NACC) is now concerned with the rate at which HIV infection is increasing among adolescents in Garissa County.
Speaking in Garissa at the sidelines of the HIV and AIDS tribunal workshop that was organized in a bid to sensitize the residents on their rights on HIV and AIDS testing, regional HIV coordinator Wario Boru said the increase in the infection is attributed to lack of parental guidance and freedom during school holidays.
The coordinator further pointed out that the county’s HIV prevalence estimates of 2018 were 0.8% meaning one out of hundred and twenty-five people living with HIV, although lower than the national figure of 4.8%, much sensitization is needed among the young people.
North Eastern is among the regions with a high percentage of stigma in the country at 50% due to socio-cultural reasons.
