Nairegia Enkare residents complains of poor roads

Residents of Nairegia Enkare area in Narok East Sub County have decried deprived roads that hinder them from transporting their farm produce to the market.

The residents said despite the area being a rich agricultural zone, the farmers do not get value for their crops because of the impassable roads.

Led by a prominent farmer and business man Jeff Mathai, the residents said they suffer in the hands of middle men who buy their produce at a throw away price and sell more than double the price at the market.

Mathai called on the current administration to prioritize tarmacking a 42-kilometer road from Nairegia Enkare junction to Wa-four area that is completely impassable during rainy seasons.

The area, he said, is rich in potato, maize, carrots, beans, vegetables, wheat and barley production which rot in the shamba during rainy seasons because of the poor road.

He lamented that the farmers use donkeys and motor bikes to transport farm produce for over 40kms from their shambas to Nairegia Enkare trading center.

Gideon Karanja, a pickup driver said every time he transports farm produce from the area, he has to take his vehicle to the garage for repair.

During the rainy season, Karanja said the situation is worse as the road becomes very slippery and one has to spend many nights in the area before accessing the tarmacked road.

“It is ridiculous that some people are suffering because of prolonged dry spells in their areas yet we have more than enough food in this place that cannot rich the market easily,” said Karanja.

They spoke during the burial of a Mau Mau freedom fighter veteran Lucy Wanjiru Njoroge.
