Nakumatt staff held demonstrations today to supermarket chain head offices demanding delayed salaries for both June and July.
Earlier, the Nakumatt management in a memo said that it would pay its employees in installments of 30 per cent, 40 per cent and 30 per cent over a period of three weeks.
“The company has reviewed salary payment plans with an intention of ensuring that every employee gets a percentage of his/her salary every for a total of three weeks in a month,” read the memo in part.
Nakumatt recently has been in debt that has seen many manufacturers pull their items from the various Nakumatt stores.
The letter from the management signed by managing director Atul Shah had cautioned Nakumatt employees against participating in was termed an illegal strike.
“Such actions are illegal. Any employee who participates will be subject to consequences pursuant to the Employment Act,” the letter reads in part.
Mr. Atul also appealed to the workers to remain calm as the matter was being sorted out.
