Nakumatt staff strike over salary delays

The usual operations at Nakumatt  today morning have been disrupted as some of their the staff downed their tools in solidarity over delayed salary payments by their employer.

They took their protests to Mombasa Road, demanding payment of their June and July salaries.

It is barely a month after Nakumatt sent a memo to its workers stating that it would pay them in three installments split into 30%, 40% and 30% over three weeks.

“The company has reviewed salary payment plans with an intention of ensuring that every employee gets a percentage of his/her salary every for a total of three weeks in a month,” says a section of the memo.

The workers today marched while chanting that they don’t need any more memos and needed their salaries urgently.

However, Nakumatt responded to the strike terming it as illegal. They urged the workers to resume work as usual.

“A section of staff have not reported to their workstations. From a management perspective, that’s an illegal and unprotected strike. Management reserves the right to pursue the necessary disciplinary action,” says in a statement.

Nakumatt contends that at this point, a strike would paralyze ongoing efforts to sustain the enterprise.
