The county government of Narok is working with the National government to plant more than 43 million trees in the area in a bid to attain a 30 percent forest cover.
Speaking after holding a closed-door meeting with heads of department at the commissioner’s boardroom, Governor Samuel Tunai and Commissioner Evans Achoki said they will focus first uplifting the already existing forest.
Governor Tunai said they are working with relevant bodies like Ewaso Nyiro Development Authority (ENSDA) and Kenya Forest Service (KFS) to plant the seedlings in the 10,000 acres of Enosupukia forest in Narok North Sub County.
In other existing forests like Nyakweri and Maasai Mau forest, the governor said they will enhance enforcement to prevent further destruction of the forests.
He reiterated that they will work with security officers to ensure no one encroaches the forest land to burn charcoal or logging.
At the same time, governor Tunai asked organizations like schools, hospitals, churches and individual farmers to collect tree seedlings from the KFS offices to plant in their premises.
Narok County Commissioner, Evans Achoki said the county will enforce the law on cutting down trees saying those found committing the crime will be arrested and arraigned in court.
Achoki added that the process of planting trees will commence immediately and continue for the next three months during the season of long rains.
