The leadership of the National Assembly has called for a renewed commitment to bipartisan cooperation as lawmakers gear up to tackle pressing national challenges.
During the mid-term retreat for Members of the National Assembly held in Naivasha, Nakuru County, leaders from both houses emphasized the importance of unity in fulfilling the Assembly’s constitutional mandate.
Majority Leader Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah (Kikuyu) and Minority Leader Hon. Junet Mohamed (Suna East) underscored the significant progress achieved through bipartisan efforts in the past and urged their colleagues to maintain this collaborative spirit.
“We have made substantial milestones as a House by embracing bipartisan approach, and this should remain our guiding principle,” said Hon. Ichung’wah.
Ichung’wah sentiments were echoed by minority leader Hon. Junet Mohamed who stressed the importance of unity in the Fourth Session of the Assembly.
“We must in the Fourth Session be conscious of the importance of fostering a bipartisan approach when engaging in our Legislative and other business,” stated Hon Junet.
“The challenges facing our nation are too great to be resolved by a single party. We must appreciate that our work in the Fourth Session comes against the backdrop of the broad based government. I therefore urge us to embrace this spirit, put our differences aside and work towards discharging our mandate as a collective team,” added the Minority Leader.
On his part, speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Moses Wetangula commended Members for their resilience and bipartisan approach, particularly in the face of recent challenges that threatened legislative business.
“I appreciate all Members for the charisma, steadfastness and bi-partisan approach that you demonstrated in the face of those life-threatening events. Indeed, your resilience is nothing short of inspiring, for it guaranteed legislative business continuity of this House,” said Hon. Wetangula.
The leaders’ call for unity comes at a critical time, as the National Assembly prepares to address key legislative priorities in the coming months.
The retreat served as a platform for lawmakers to reflect on their achievements, strategize on upcoming tasks, and reaffirm their commitment to serving the nation collectively.
