In a significant stride toward improving healthcare accessibility, Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale and Council of Governors (CoG) Chairperson H.E. Ahmed Abdullahi co-chaired a pivotal meeting on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at Afya House in Nairobi.
The high-level gathering brought together county governors and key health officials to deliberate on critical health sector programs, marking a collaborative effort to enhance Kenya’s healthcare framework.
The agenda spotlighted the rollout of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), a cornerstone initiative aimed at ensuring all Kenyans access quality healthcare.
“The agenda focused on the rollout of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), implementation of the National Equipment Service Program (NESP), KEMSA’s support to public health facilities, and operational arrangements for the Social Health Authority (SHA),” the Ministry of Health announced.
This meeting underscored a commitment to addressing longstanding grievances, particularly for UHC workers, with discussions on sustainable solutions to bolster their welfare.
Key deliberations included the SHA payment systems and the Facility Improvement Financing Act, 2023, which establishes mechanisms for efficient revenue management from public health facilities.
“Key deliberations centered on SHA payment systems, sustainable solutions to address longstanding health sector grievances particularly concerning UHC workers and county level sensitization on the new consignment stock commodity supply model,” the statement noted.
The meeting also explored the National Equipment Service Program and KEMSA’s role in supporting public health facilities, promising better resource distribution.
In attendance included Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, and CEOs from KEMSA, SHA, and DHA, alongside governors such as Muthomi Njuki (Tharaka Nithi), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), and Gladys Wanga (Homabay).
