NCCK Demand for Protection of Constitutional Rights Ahead of Saba Saba Protests

Amid rising concerns over human rights violations and the shrinking space for public dissent, National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK)have called for the protection of constitutional rights ahead of the Saba Saba protests.

Marking the day when Kenyans first demanded multi-party democracy in 1990, the upcoming commemoration on Monday, July 7, 2025, is expected to draw peaceful demonstrators across the country.

“We demand that in line with the constitution and the National Police Service Act, the security agencies should provide adequate security to all peaceful and unarmed demonstrators on Monday, ensuring that every Kenyan enjoys their rights and freedoms,” read the statement.

The leaders also urged the police not to facilitate or partner with goons who have been allegedly terrorizing Kenyans.

“The police must not facilitate or partner with the armed goons who have been terrorizing Kenyans and should instead arrest them together with their financiers,” the statement read in part.

Additionally the council demanded that the Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen recant the shoot to kill order and be ready to be held accountable for all extra judicial killings done by the police.

The clergy also called all Kenyans to honour the legacy of Saba Saba by defending constitutionalism and the rule of law values that are essential for a just and democratic society.
