The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a formal statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding a viral video circulating on social media that shows a police officer holding multiple laptops.

According to the statement released by the Office of the Inspector General, the footage was recorded during recent protests in Nairobi, during which several shops were reportedly broken into and looted.

NPS confirmed that the laptops in question were recovered by officers as part of an active investigation into the looting and vandalism that took place.

“NPS wishes to clarify that following recent protests in Nairobi, several shops were broken into and various items were stolen. Police officers arrested one suspect and recovered four laptops, which are now in safe custody as exhibits at the Central Police Station, Nairobi,”  read the statement.

The NPS has urged business owners and individuals whose premises were broken into and who may have lost laptops during the chaos to visit the station to identify any of the recovered items.

“We therefore urge anyone whose premises were broken into and had laptops stolen to visit the station to identify the recovered items,” noted the NPS.

The police also emphasized that investigations are ongoing to trace and apprehend additional suspects involved in the criminal acts that occurred during the unrest.

In concluding the press statement, the NPS reaffirmed its commitment to upholding public safety and protecting property, urging the public to remain calm and cooperative during the investigations.

The statement comes amid heightened public scrutiny over police conduct during the protests, with social media users calling for transparency and accountability.
