ODM Accuses Jubilee Gov’t of Discrimination in Voter Registration

The Orange Democratic Movement party has once again launched a complaint against the Jubilee. Government and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) concerning voter registration ahead of the 2017 General Election.

According to the Opposition, the Interior Ministry, the National Registration Bureau and Huduma Centres were discriminating against CORD strongholds in the issuance of National Identification Cards and voter registration.

In a press statement, the Orange Party noted: “We demand an explanation from IEBC why the three institutions are involved in the registration of persons… we warn that this segregationist pattern will certainly have undesired consequences in the days ahead. ODM will reserve the right to respond to those consequences to preserve and safeguard democracy and the right of Kenyans of voting age to register as voters and cast their vote in a free and fair poll.”

John Mbadi, the ODM Chairman stated that Jubilee was working with the mentioned agencies to secretly register more voters in the Jubilee strongholds.

The Opposition demanded to know the role and position of the international community, particularly the United Nations Development Programme , which is known to finance and work closely with the IEBC.

In the presser, the party warned of dire consequences if the Government continued to interfere with the process.

Moses Wetangula, the CORD co-principal also accused Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery of using his position to favour Jubilee.

“We want to tell the Interior CS that we will impeach him if the trend continues. We will not allow him to use his office to play Jubilee politics,” Wetangula reported.

However, the Interior Ministry dismissed the allegations calling for the Opposition to table any evidence it had and stop making outrageous claims.

The ministry’s spokesman Mwenda Njoka added “The PS has been moving around the country, he has even been to Homa Bay, Kisumu, Mwingi telling those aged 18 and above to get IDs. The IDs are necessary to, among others, enable one to access various Government services and we don’t link that to voter registration.”
