Nairobi police are under scrutiny after a protester was fatally shot on Thursday evening during the ongoing demonstrations led by Gen Z against the proposed Finance Bill 2024.

The young man who lost his life has been identified as Rex Kanyike Masai, a 24-year-old. His body is being held at the City Mortuary Morgue.

In the company of his friend, Rex was shot in the knee outside the Hilton Hotel along Moi Avenue by a police officer.

Activist Boniface Mwangi also confirmed the incident in an X statement, highlighting that he met the parents of the deceased following the incident.

“I have met with Rex’s mum, and we are on our way to City Mortuary. Since it’s a homicide, the police have said the body has to be booked in a public mortuary. After the post-mortem, we shall move Rex. Her name is Gillian Munyao, and a killer cop just shattered her life forever,” Boniface Mwangi wrote on X.

“I’m sharing pictures of 24-year-old Rex Kanyike lying in the morgue with consent from his parents, Chrispin Odawa, and Gillian Munyao who are standing over his body at the City mortuary. He was killed by the police this evening. They’re shocked and numb from the loss of their son,” he added.

In a push for justice, the activist condemned the inhumane act of the Police officers and how they were insensitive towards the matter.

“In Rex Kanyike’s pocket were his Identification Card, and phone. He wasn’t armed. He knew that Kenya Police harasses any young person who walks around without an ID. After the police shot him, his friend Alex, asked the police to help carry him, they told him “Wacha akufe!” Mwangi stated on X.

Kenyans have expressed their outrage on social media, demanding justice following the shooting incident involving Rex Kanyike.
