Former PCEA moderator David Gathanju alongside James Muiruri and Peter Kamuthu at the Kiambu law courts were charged for stealing 59 million shillings from the church.

During the hearing, the complainant in the case reverend Peter Kania who is the current secretary-general of the PCEA general assembly was sucked into the scandal.

Church accountant Jane Mwihaki told the court that by the virtue of being the CEO of the church, Rev Kania was a mandatory signatory to all church bank accounts meaning no money could have been withdrawn without his knowledge.
