The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that 11 people died and 567 individuals were arrested during the Sabasaba protests held on July 7, 2025.
The protests, which were marked by demonstrations across various parts of the country, resulted in significant casualties and property damage.
According to a press statement issued by the Office of the Inspector General, 52 police officers and 11 civilians were injured in the course of the unrest.
The protests also saw the destruction of 12 police vehicles, three government vehicles, and four civilian vehicles.
Among those arrested is Gitonga Mukunji, Member of Parliament for Manyatta Constituency, as investigations continue into the incidents reported.
NPS commended the majority of citizens who remained peaceful during the protests, while condemning acts of lawlessness by a section of the demonstrators.
“NPS commends the majority of Kenyans for being law-abiding and heeding the call to maintain law and order. However, certain individuals remained determined to engage in acts of lawlessness that involved multiple criminal acts, including attacks on law enforcement officers and looting,” the statement read.
The police also acknowledged the efforts of their officers, saying they acted with professionalism and restraint amid provocation and violence.
“The NPS also commends its officers for demonstrating exceptional restraint and professionalism in the face of sustained violence and provocation by criminals who infiltrated the protests…”
The service urged anyone with information on individuals involved in criminal acts to report to the nearest police station or contact authorities through official hotlines.
NPS emphasized that all incidents would be thoroughly investigated, stating its commitment to serving and protecting all Kenyans, residents, and visitors.
