The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a statement following the shooting of a civilian by a police officer in Nairobi during the demonstrations demanding justice for Albert Ojwang.

“The National Police Service (NPS) has noted with great concern an incident involving the shooting of an unarmed civilian by a police officer using an anti-riot shotgun, within the Nairobi Central Business District on 17th June 2025,” read the statement in part from the NPS.

The victim, identified as Eli Joshua, a mask hawker, was shot on the head and immediately collapsed. He was later taken to the hospital in critical condition and is currently receiving treatment.

In response to this incident, the Inspector-General of the National Police Service ordered the immediate arrest and arraignment of the officer involved.

“The said police officer has since been arrested,” stated Muchiri Nyaga, NPS Director Corporate Communication/Spokesperson.

Additionally, the NPS acknowledged the presence of a group of individuals armed with crude weapons during today’s protests in the CBD.

“The Service takes great exception and does not condone such unlawful groupings. Such individuals will be handled firmly, according to the law,” Muchiri added.

“Consequently, investigations have commenced to identify and deal with the criminals accordingly,” he reiterated.
