President William Ruto visited London’s King’s Cross Railway Station to draw lessons for Kenya’s Nairobi Railway City project.
King’s Cross, a major transport hub in the UK, serves as a blueprint for Nairobi’s new transit and urban development initiative.
The Nairobi Railway City aims to revolutionize public transport in the capital by creating a modern, integrated and efficient transit hub.
The project will combine transport facilities with commercial, residential, and recreational spaces to ease Nairobi’s traffic congestion and promote sustainable urban growth.
Key features include over 10,000 affordable housing units, green spaces, and improved infrastructure designed to raise the living standards of Nairobi residents.
This initiative reflects Kenya’s commitment to innovative solutions for urban challenges.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, President Ruto said, “It will be a multi-modal, transit-oriented urban development which will exploit the station’s strategic spot to establish itself as an iconic nerve centre for a thriving continental metropolis.”
The Nairobi Railway City project is part of a partnership between Kenya and the United Kingdom, bringing technical expertise and investment to support Nairobi’s urban transformation.
This collaboration is expected to deepen bilateral ties and position Nairobi as a leading economic and transport hub in East Africa.
President Ruto’s visit to King’s Cross symbolizes a crucial step in realizing this vision.
The project promises to deliver efficient, reliable public transport integrated with urban living — a potential game-changer in easing Nairobi’s notorious traffic challenges and setting new infrastructure standards across the region.
