President William Ruto’s ambitious fertilizer subsidy programs have delivered remarkable achievements, transforming the agricultural landscape in Kenya.
Through strategic initiatives and a focus on supporting farmers, the government has made substantial progress in boosting agricultural productivity and reducing the cost of farming inputs.
One of the standout accomplishments is the digital registration of 6.15 million farmers by 2024, which has streamlined the distribution of subsidized fertilizer and enhanced farmers’ access to essential services.
This digital platform has proven to be a game-changer, ensuring that the benefits of the subsidy programs reach those who need them most.
“By 2024, 6.15 million farmers were registered on a digital platform, streamlining the distribution of affordable fertilizer and access to vital services,” stated President Ruto.
The impact on fertilizer distribution has been profound. Between 2022 and 2024, the number of fertilizer bags distributed rose by an astonishing 514%, from 1.4 million to 8.6 million.
This increased availability has enabled more farmers to access quality inputs, leading to better crop yields and overall productivity.
“Fertilizer distribution rose dramatically by 514%, from 1.4 million bags in 2022 to 8.6 million bags in 2024,” noted President Ruto.
Additionally, the cost of fertilizer has seen a significant reduction. The price per bag dropped by 58%, from KES 6,000 in 2022 to KES 2,500 in 2024.
This decrease has relieved the financial burden on farmers, making it more affordable for them to cultivate their land and contribute to national food security.
According to the head of state, the success of these programs is evident in the maize production figures.
In 2023, maize production surged by 38.9%, reaching a total of 85.7 million bags.
This increase has not only ensured sufficient supply for domestic consumption but has also reduced the country’s reliance on maize imports by 33.7%, resulting in substantial foreign exchange savings.
“Maize production increased by 38.9%, totalling 85.7 million bags in 2023.Imports fell by 33.7%, resulting in significant foreign exchange savings,” the President added.
Fertilizer subsidy programs have been pivotal in driving agricultural growth and empowering farmers across the nation.
The government remains committed to further supporting the agricultural sector through innovative policies and interventions, ensuring sustainable food security and economic prosperity for all Kenyans.
