President William Ruto has fired all the Cabinet Secretaries and Attorney General with immediate effect as of 11th July 2024.
In a press briefing at State House Nairobi on Thursday afternoon, the President announced the dismissal of his entire cabinet.
The only offices that will not be affected according to the President will be the Office of the Deputy President and the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary.
The President made a public announcement that he has resolved to dissolve his entire cabinet.
“Upon reflection and listening keenly to what the people of Kenya have said and after holistic appraisal of the performance of my Cabinet and its achievements and challenges, I have today in line with the powers given to me decided to dismiss with immediate effect all the Cabinet Secretaries and Attorney General except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and the office of the Deputy President is not affected in any way,” the Head of State said.
The president’s recent removal of Cabinet Secretaries means that he is now required, as per the Kenyan Constitution, to propose new candidates for the vacant positions.
These nominees will need to undergo a vetting process by parliamentary committees and receive approval from the National Assembly.
It is essential that each nominee meets the criteria outlined in the Constitution and takes the oath of office before assuming their responsibilities.
According to Article 152(3), the National Assembly has 21 days to either approve or reject the nominees. The selection of Cabinet Secretaries must be based solely on their qualifications, experience, and ability to fulfil the duties of the office.
