Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul K. Wainanina has designated Prof. Waceke Wanjohi, the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (academic), as the acting vice-chancellor.
At a handing-over ceremony held in the central administration of Kenyatta University on Wednesday, Prof. Wainaina handed over the power instruments to Prof. Waceke.
On April 15 Prof. Wainanina in an internal memo announced that he would be departing for his yearly accumulated leave on the same day.
“Following consultations with the Univerisity Council, I wish to notify the university community that I will be proceeding on annual leave with effect from 15th April 2024,” read the memo in part.
Prof. Wainaina asked all Kenyatta University staff to extend their full support to Prof. Waceke. while he is on leave.
Since August 2016, Professor Paul Wainaina has served as Kenyatta University’s vice chancellor.
Wainaina garnered media attention during the majority of 2022 for his strong stance in favor of KU’s land protection, which led to his removal from office and subsequent reinstatement in a matter of weeks.
He received special recognition for standing up for the institution’s title deeds in the face of strong pressure from the government at the time.
Professor Paul Wainaina took over office from Professor Olive Mugenda, the Chairperson of Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital in the year 2018.
