Kenya National Union of Nurses chairman, Seth Panyako, has demanded unconditional re-instatement of members who participated in a nationwide strike in Kisii County last year.
Speaking in Kisii, the chairman accused governor James Ongwae of disobeying court orders and labour laws besides discriminating the affected nurses.
Panyako claimed county governments whose nurses had joined the work boycott had allowed them to resume duty and wondered why Kisii should be an exception.
After the industrial action was called off, the county government refused to re-admit them terming the strike illegal.
But the nurses’ union moved to court and obtained orders compelling the employer to reinstate them.
The chairman, remarked, the move by Kisii county government amounted to denying area residents the much needed health services offered by the nurses.
The nurses and their dependants had also suffered pecuniary embarrassment as a result of the punitive action of the county government.
He petitioned the governor to review his stand and direct that the affected nurses report to work without of loss of their benefits.
According to the union branch treasurer, Jane Midiwo, some nurses were allowed to resume work while others were not.
Nurses who were recalled had missed their salaries to date, she added.
