Kitutu Chache South residents have temporarily barricaded Kisii-Kisumu highway under construction and protested to the area county commissioner’s office over massive dust conditions.
Led by area MP Richard Onyonka, the residents complained that the dust conditions had been prompted by the withdrawal of a contractor after he was allegedly harassed by county enforcement officers.
The abandoning of the road led to clouds of dust owing to non-sprinkling of water.
Speaking at the county commissioner’s office,,Godfrey Kigochi, the legislator claimed some residents including his family had contracted respiratory diseases.
Onyonka wanted the commissioner take up the issue with the national government , and allow the contractor to resume the road works by containing the dust.
Responding the commissioner instructed the residents to open up the highway as he liaised with the site engineer with a view to resolving the impasse.
He directed that the water browsers be deployed to the highway immediately.
This was the first incident in the region since endorsement of the executive order by the president appointing interior ministry cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i as chairperson to the National Development Implementation and Communication Committee.
