Respect us , Chebukati warn NASA and Jubilee

The Independent Boundaries and Election Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has defended his commission over prerogatives that commissioners are devotees of particular alliance.

This is after efforts by both Jubilee and National Super Alliance (NASA) party leaders to demand changes to a proposed team to route the October 17 fresh top-level elections.

Rubbishing the demands, Chebukati dubbed the calls an affront on its independence.

The chairperson wrote to Jubilee Secretary-General Raphael Tuju and National Super Alliance co-principal Musalia Mudavadi on Wednesday evening said that the commission should not be directed or influenced since that would be a compromise to its independency.

“Please note that the commission is an independent constitutional body, which as per Article 249 of the Constitution shall not be subject to direction or control by any person or authority,” Mr Chebukati said in his letter to Mr Tuju.

“It is therefore unacceptable for you to provide a list of staff that you direct us not to consider for the project team.”
