RNAS Culdrose’s women still ‘smiling’ despite 40-0 loss to opponents

A Cornwall women’s football team are still “smiling” despite suffering an incredible 40-0 defeat.

RNAS Culdrose ladies, who were only able to field eight players, were on the wrong end of the hammering as they crashed to defeat at home to local rivals Helston on Sunday in the Pirate FM Cornwall Women’s League.

It completed a 67-0 double for the newly-formed Helston team, as twins Sasha and Smara Sparkes scored 22 goals between them, with amazingly Sasha finding the net 15 times.

It has been a tough season for Culdrose, who have lost a number of players posted elsewhere, and in their 11 games, they have conceded 177 goals and scored just three, with their only win coming from a “walkover”.

But despite the mismatch Helston’s joint manager Charlotte Bond, who scored twice herself, said their opponents still enjoyed the game.

“They were all still smiling at the end despite the scoreline and all credit to them” she said.

“The game was played in good spirit and the score did not reflect the attitude of Culdrose, who have lost a number of players, but kept on battling. There was no mickey-taking ”

It was only 4-0 after 20 minutes, but 18-0 at half time. And Charlotte admitted the Helston team were in too low a league.

Only formed in the summer, Helston had to appeal to the FA to earn a place in the League despite having many players who have competed at a higher level.

“We were not allowed to play in a higher league, but hopefully we can win promotion
