The most celebrated player in the whole world, Christiano Ronaldo, on Saturday painted disappointment on the faces of Portugal fans as his national team played Austria in Euro 2016 games.
The moment that got Ronaldo trending on Twitter came in the 79th minute of a crucial Euro 2016 match against fellow under-performing Group F side Austria on Saturday.
After getting taken down in the box by center back Martin Hinteregger, Ronaldo stepped up to take the spot kick to finally put the Portuguese in front.
He had opportunities to score throughout, but this clearly would be his best chance of the night. A successful penalty also would’ve made history, making Ronaldo the first player to score in four straight European Championships.
He took the kick perfectly sending the keeper to the right, ball to the left but unfortunately it hit on the bar, a moment that left the Real Madrid star trending on twitter as the fans mocked him.
Following the disappointment, Ronaldo has pleaded with home team fans to have faith with Portugal team for they are determined to deliver.
“But I’m a bit sad, because this wasn’t the way I wanted to break this record. The most beautiful way would have been…,” he added, shaking his head.
“It wasn’t something we wanted,” he said of the result. “We had a lot of chances and we did well, but we weren’t able to finish.
“I also missed some chances – a penalty and some other chances. But that’s part of football. We need to continue to believe.”
“The players, we need to think that it’s still possible,” he added. “If we win (against Hungary), we qualify. And also the Portuguese people, the fans who love Portugal, they also have to believe in it.
