School Burns Hours After Matiang’i Visit

Nyamache Boys High School in Kisii County on Monday went up in flames hours after Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i visited the school to address the spate of arson attacks in the last one month.

It is reported that the inferno broke out at around 7pm destroying a dormitory identified as “Manga”.

“A fire is ongoing in the institution, but I cannot speculate on the cause of the fire just yet,” Kisii County Commander Ms Agnes Mudamba was quoted by the Nation.

Nyamache police boss Japheth Mwirichia confirmed the incident stating: “The fire began at around 7pm when the electricity supply went back on after a day-long blackout. We managed to put it out with the help of students, staff and members of the public”.

No injuries were reported and the students managed to salvage their beddings.

The fire at the institution is a second incident in the last one month. The first occurred on 30th May 2016 when two dormitories were damaged and 44 students injured.

On Monday, the CS issued tough rules following the rampant burning of schools in the past one month. He stated that culprits from the said schools will not be allowed to transfer to other institutions.

He noted that a student seeking transfer will need an approval letter from the Sub-County Directors of Education.

Matiang’i said that his Ministry would not allow learners involved in the burning of schools to spread their bad behaviour to other institutions.
