A group of six students have been arrested in Nyeri County following a fire that destroyed two dormitories at Gachika Secondary School in Kiganjo on Sunday evening.
The fire reportedly started in one of the dormitories at around 6pm while the students were in one of the laboratories during an entertainment session. No property belonging to 102 students who shared the dormitories was salvaged.
Kieni East divisional police commander said that 250 milliliter jerri-can believed to have been used to ferry petrol was found in one of the toilets in the school as he revealed that they had received information about a plan by students to burn the school and a neighbouring school, Kahiga Secondary School.
“Officers were deployed to conduct a search in the two schools but we did not find anything at the time,” said Mr Mbaluku.
He added that the six students, all in Form Two, are being held for questioning at the Kiganjo Police Station.
“Investigations are under way and once we have sufficient evidence against the students they will be taken to court,” said the police boss.
However, the motive behind the arson remains unclear and some of the students who spoke to the Nation said they did not have any problem with the school administration.
