The Senate is set to convene a special sitting tomorrow, Wednesday, August 14th, 2024, to deliberate on impeachment charges against Meru Governor, Hon. Kawira Mwangaza.
This session follows the recent approval by the County Assembly of Meru of a motion seeking her removal from office.
Members of the Meru County Assembly last Thursday impeached Mwangaza for the third time, with 49 MCAs voting for her ouster.
Governor Mwangaza, who has been at the helm of Meru County, now faces a critical test as the Senate assesses the charges brought against her.
Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi in a gazette notice appointed Wednesday 14th August 2024 for hearing of charges against Meru Governor kicking off at 2:30pm.
“I have appointed Wednesda,14th August ,2024 as a day for a special sitting of the senate. The sitting shall be held in the senate chamber, main parliament buildings,Nairobi, commencing at 2:30pm,” read the gazette notice.
“The business to be transacted at the sitting shall be the hearing of the charges against Ms.Kawira Mwangaza, the Governor of Meru County,” noted Kingi.
The motion, which was passed by the Meru County Assembly, has led to widespread public interest, as the outcome could have significant implications for the county’s leadership and governance.
The Senate’s special sitting is expected to be a high-stakes affair, with both supporters and opponents of the Governor closely watching the proceedings.
Should the Senate find merit in the charges, it could pave the way for her removal from office, a move that would mark a significant shift in Meru County’s political landscape.
As the Senate prepares to hear the charges, there is anticipation of robust legal arguments and a thorough examination of the allegations.
The hearing will be a key moment for Governor Mwangaza, as she seeks to defend her position and refute the accusations leveled against her.
The outcome of this special sitting will not only determine the future of Governor Mwangaza’s tenure but will also set a precedent for how such matters are handled in Kenya’s evolving political environment.
The Senate’s decision will be closely scrutinized by both the public and political analysts, as it may influence future cases of impeachment across the country.
