Tibor Nagy, assistant secretary of state for African affairs is headed for Khartoum to push for dialogue between Sudan’s military rulers and protesters. Tibor is the senior most US diplomat for Africa.
Tibor will meet members of the military leadership and protest leaders. Al Bashir was ousted in April 2019.
A State Department statement said, “He will call for a cessation of attacks against civilians and urge parties to work toward creating an enabling environment for talks to resume.”
The army has recently clamped down hard on protesters leaving dozens dead. Protesters want a swift transition to civilian rule.
Nagy has warned that Sudan needs to transition to a civilian-led government if it wants to improve relations with the United States.
His itinerary includes visits to Ethiopia, Mozambique and South Africa.
