Several cops feared dead after gunman takes over Kapenguria station

A gunman is said to have opened fire and killed several officers at Kapenguria police station in West Pokot on Thursday.

Unconfirmed reports indicated the attacker is a suspected Al Shabaab terrorist who turned violent at about 3am and grabbed a gun from one of the officers on duty.

He has reportedly been holding some of them hostage since then and is still shooting.

GSU officers were deployed to the area, a Star reporter said, adding the gunman was still inside the police station.

“The reinforcement team cannot access the station because the gunman has been shooting haphazardly,” the reporter said.

Police spokesperson Charles Owino confirmed “serious exchange” but did not give details.

“We have information of the exchange but are awaiting a report from the area PPO before we can update the public,” he told the Star by phone.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet also confirmed the attack but did not say if the gunman is an Al Shabaab terrorist.
