With funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Qualibasic Seed Company will help in multiplication of foundation seeds in sub-Saharan Africa under implementation by the African Agricultural Technology Foundation.
The seed sector in the region has faced financial challenges that hinder timely supply of quality seeds. Seed Trade Association of Kenya chairman James Karanja said the Kenya seed sector has faced inconsistent supply of well-researched and certified varieties, thus impacting negatively on agriculture productivity.
