Shanzu Court Approves 21-Day Detention for Suspects in IEBC Kilifi Manager Murder Case

A court in Shanzu has authorized the 21-day detention of two individuals suspected of involvement in the robbery and murder of Aisha Abubakar, the acting manager of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in Kilifi.

The suspects, Joseph Sunday and Brian Templer Oyare, are to be held at Bamburi police station following Senior Principal Magistrate Leah Juma’s determination that there are sufficient grounds for their detention to aid in the ongoing investigations.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions among the reasons that court considered include the fact that the duo has no fixed address that could be used to trace them if handed temporary freedom.

“Further, Hon. Juma observed the offences committed were serious in nature and authorities needed time and all the support to finalize investigations,” said the ODPP.

“Court heard that the two suspects were arrested on 13th January 2025 while in hiding, eight days after the incident at the deceased’s residents in Kisauni, a Mombasa suburb,” the ODPP added.

The ODPP further reported that earlier, police constable Oscar Mugalla, in an affidavit filed before the court, asked for time to record statements from key witnesses, and forward the exhibits recovered for forensic analysis to Nairobi in a bid to finalize investigations.

Mr. Mugalla explained that the police had so far recovered the victim’s mobile phone, ID cards, SIM cards, birth certificates among other paraphernalia related to this case.

The  matter will be mentioned on 6th February 2025.
