SOG’s Deadly Raid in Garissa: Al-Shabaab Loses Ground In Latest Crackdown

By Neville Oduor

On Monday, June 2nd, 2025, the National Police Service’s elite Special Operations Group (SOG) executed a well-planned and intelligence-driven dismantling operation.

The operation was conducted in the Najo and Guracho areas of Garissa County, suspected hideouts of terrorists. This region is mostly a hot spot for silent extremists.

The group’s encounter with the Al-Shabaab terrorists resulted in a deadly scene, where there was a fierce exchange of gunfire.

With underlying pressure, the SOG eventually managed to thwart the terrorists to their demise.

This caused the death of four Al-Shabaab terrorists and successfully recovered four AK-47 rifles, one PKM machine gun, assorted ammunition and communication radios among other items.

The recovered items raise a lot of questions about the broader networks of acquiring them and how sophisticated the group may be.

This successful operation marks another key achievement in dismantling the Al-Shabaab activities in the area and the North Eastern region at large. There have been previous successful operations in the region.

This achievement depicts how the dismantling of the Al-Shabaab affects their supply lines and aids in providing links to it.

On November 22, 2024, the NPS Special Operations Group (SOG), in collaboration with KDF units, ambushed a group of Al-Shabaab militants in the Dadaab area of Garissa County, near the refugee camp.

“The operation resulted in the neutralization of five terrorists who were planning to attack a security outpost. The forces recovered four AK-47 rifles, several magazines of ammunition, and a cache of explosives,” the NPS stated.

These moves show a well-coordinated effort in our security arms in ensuring the safety of our citizens against the terrorists’ inhumane acts or atrocities imposed.

The successful operations highlight the need for the Government and appropriate Ministries to continuously recruit skilled personnel, as it motivates citizens to join the security forces.

This ensures that the citizens get a chance to transition into more structured, developed institutions to promote and ensure the prolonged peace and security within the borders of the country.

The raid was hailed as a significant step in disrupting Al-Shabaab’s operational capacity in the region, reflecting Kenya’s ongoing commitment to counter-terrorism and safeguard its borders to maintain its significant political, economic and social factors.
